OFFENDER MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE

"Privileges are Earned not Given"

Conservation Camps

Inmates may earn minimum custody after serving a period of time in a secure institution. Many are classified to minimum custody and camps directly from an intake center as long as they meet specific criteria. For all inmates, a structured environment is provided. This structure helps them with problem-solving, ability to manage their anger and more important an opportunity to develop productive work skills and a positive attitude.

The majority of the population is assigned to Nevada Division of Forestry crews. The type of work performed includes fire suppression duties, construction, highway beautification and traffic accident clean up.

The education program available to inmates at these facilities is provided by Great Basin College. These programs include: G.E.D., Adult Basic Education, High School Diploma and Computer Literacy Training. Alcohol and Narcotics Anonymous meetings are held at Carlin Conservation Camp.

Medical services are provided by Lovelock Correctional Center staff.

CARLIN CONSERVATION CAMP
Suzie Creek Road
Carlin, Nevada 89822

Carlin Conservation Camp opened in July of 1988. The camp is built on the old Carlin Airport runway; located 1¼ miles East of Carlin, Nevada on Interstate 80. The property/land on which the camp sits was deeded to the Department of Corrections in exchange for inmate labor crews governed and supervised by the Nevada Division of Forestry. The deed transaction also included an agreement to provide inmate labor to the City of Carlin on an as needed basis.

Infrastructure work completed in the City of Carlin include an addition to the Police Station, a foundation for the Library and construction on the Carlin Clinic.

Inmates also constructed several fire stations in neighboring communities and remodeled the Elko County Court House along with numerous park rehabilitation projects. During the winter season, Carlin Conservation Camp inmates shovel snow for the residents of senior citizens in the City of Carlin.

The camp is built in a dormitory setting. The culinary is located inside the living area so the inmates can access it from their wings without leaving the building. All Officers, including the Counselor and Storekeeper are just outside the Rotunda area offering easy access by offenders to the entire staff.
