Coal Canyon High School

High School Diploma

Classes are offered Monday through Friday, five periods per day, between the hours of 8:10 a.m. - 5:23 p.m.  By the end of this school year it is anticipated that nearly two hundred high school diplomas will have been earned since the school's inception.

To qualify for an adult standard diploma, students must earn (or waive) a total of 8½ credits of elective courses and 12 credits for required courses, distributed as noted in the table to the left.  No more than 3 credits of physical education may be transcripted.

If a person demonstrates a competency in the use of computers, he is not required to complete the course in the use of computers and must earn or waive a total of 11½ credits in required courses. (NRS 389.688)

Any course may be applied toward the necessary 8½ elective credits.  None may be repeated once the maximum available credit for that course has been earned.

In addition to earning the requisite credits, each student must pass the Nevada Proficiency Test before becoming eligible for an adult high school diploma.

Classroom (Art & Science)

These tests are administered several times per year to students who have completed more than 15 units of study.

GED Certification

Independent Study courses are held in the Education Building four times per week in order to assist students in preparation for the GED Test.  By the end of this school year it is anticipated that nearly one hundred and fifty General Equivalency Diplomas will have been earned.

The following table sets forth the scores which a person must achieve on the GED tests to waive credits in required and elective high school courses and the corresponding number of credits which may be waived:

The maximum number of credits which may be waived in the areas of English, Mathematics and Science must be based on the number of credits previously earned in the respective area of study.  Credits in elective courses may be waived only in the area of social studies.  (NRS 389.694)
