Horticulture Program

The purpose of establishing a Horticulture program at the Lovelock Correctional Center is to provide a significant number of inmates a comprehensive, high quality educational program that provides practical experience and job training as well as knowledge needed for successful transition from this institution to prductive employment and/or business ventures of their own.  A broad, thorough introduction to important concepts and practices of greenhouse management are provided to eligible recipients through closely linked classroom and laboratory instruction. All activities are relevant to their goals.

Subjects covered will include types of greenhouses used for commercial plant production, plant propagation, professional landscaping, pruning, turf management, ornamental horticulture, plant identification and diseases, environmental factors, irrigation and fertilization and employee safety in greenhouse and nurseries.

Upon completion, offenders will demonstrate mastery of employability skills such as developing a database of their skills, experiences and education; preparing a job search plan; creating a customized resume; basic business job skills such as bookeeping, typing and word processing, polished communication skills; and the ability to think as an entrepreneur and business person.
