The Nevada Department of Prisons selected Corrections Corporation of America as the private corrections contractor to design, build, and operate a correctional facility for women in Las Vegas. The Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Facility opened in September 1997. In November 1998 the institution was accredited by the American Correctional Association. On October 1st, 2004, the Nevada Department of Corrections assumed control of the center.

In FY 99 the department paid $7,621,390.35 to Corrections Corporation of America. The average population was 507. In the first quarter of FY 00 the department paid $2,116,917.15. The average population for the first quarter was 543.

WORK PROGRAMS:

Inmates at the Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Facility are employed in the usual institutional assignments as well as in an NDF program. There is currently one 12 person crew and another will be formed this fall. 

EDUCATION PROGRAMS:

The Clark County School District provides the education program at the Florence McClure Women’s Correctional Facility. The district assigns 9 staff to the program.

There are currently 130 inmates enrolled in the Community College of Southern Nevada program.
